How RNA vaccines could open a new chapter in cancer treatment

For decades, cancer vaccines have offered an intriguing promise: teach the immune system to recognize cancer, attack it, and potentially keep it from returning. Now, advances in RNA technology are bringing that promise closer to reality.

Recent Phase 3 results from Merck and Moderna provided important clinical validation for an mRNA cancer vaccine. But those results also raise a bigger question: Can this technology move beyond personalized vaccines to scalable, off-the-shelf treatments targeting cancers such as HER2-positive breast cancer?

    Dr. Katarzyna Jerzak, MD, MSc, FRCPC: Medical Oncologist and Clinician Investigator, Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre. Dr. Jerzak is the Director of Breast Oncology Clinical Trials at Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre and is committed to advancing the care of patients with breast cancer through the evaluation of new treatment strategies.
  • Steve Reed, PhD: Co-founder & CEO, HDT Bio. Steve is a veteran immunologist, vaccine pioneer, and serial biotech entrepreneur whose previous companies include Corixa, acquired by GSK, and cancer-immunotherapy company Immune Design, acquired by Merck.
  • David LaPointe: Director of Oncology Strategy, HDT Bio. David is a biotech executive and entrepreneur with experience building and advancing life-sciences companies across oncology, immunology, and diagnostics. He leads HDT Bio’s business development and oncology strategy, including strategic partnerships, clinical collaborations.
